Industrial Visit of II B.Tech Mechanical Engineering Students

B.Tech Second Year (2014-18 Batch) Students of Mechanical Engineering went for an industrial visit to casting industries located in Vijayawada on 22nd March 2016. The students visited three industries - Kristna Engineering Works, Prakasa Engineering Works and Prakasa Spectro Alloy Cast Pvt. Ltd., all located in Enikepadu, Vijayawada.

Kristna Engineering Works is engaged in manufacturing, supplying and exporting of premium quality equipment and spares required for sugar, cement, mining and thermal industries. The company manufactures various grades of cast iron and cast steel castings. The students observed various sections such as pattern making section, mould preparation, metal pouring and finally the machining section. The students were fortunate to have a view and understand the operating principle of cupola furnaces of various capacities. The students also observed various machining operations being done on heavy machineries like lathes, plano-millers, planers, double-head shapers, vertical turning lathes etc.

Prakasa Spectro Cast Pvt. Ltd. manufactures various grades of cast steel, alloy steel, manganese steel, Nickel-hard and high chrome castings. For steel castings, they use induction furnaces of various capacities to melt the metal. The quality steel castings are being supplied to sugar, cement and power generation sectors. The students were also emphasized on metallurgical aspects like the significance of chemical elemental analysis done by spectroscopy. The students were accompanied by the department faculties - Dr. N. Naga Krishna, Mr. K. V. G. Rama Seshu and Mr. M. Vinod. The visit to these companies gave an overview to the students about the casting and fabrication processes. The students sincerely thank Sri T. Raghava Prasad Garu, Managing Director of Kristna Engineering Works, for according permission to visit the industry, for personally accompanying them during the visit and for sharing his valuable knowledge, experience and enlightening the students about the manufacturing processes.
